Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island has one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems featuring; Rainforests, marshes, meadows, beaches, mountains, oceans, rivers, and lakes, Vancouver Island inhabits a multitude of wildlife species. This sparsely populated area known for its beauty and tranquility is the perfect place to experience the natural outdoors especially with much of the island maintained as protected parkland. Vancouver Island with an area of 32,000sq km / 19,884sq mi is the largest island off the west coast of North America.
The Beaufort Mountain Range is one of Canada’s biggest all natural ski bases, while Strathcona Park’s Della Falls is Canada’s highest waterfalls and one of tenth highest waterfalls in the world and Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park is home to some of the world’s largest spruce trees and ancient knotted cedars.
Wildlife is in abundance on this incredible island including frequent views of eagles soaring high in the sky, to wolf eels and octopus beneath the blue ocean surface. Hornby Island and Nootka Sound are two of the few places in the world where scuba divers can view primitive six-gill sharks, a common species of deep water shark!
Victoria
As one of the sunniest coastal cities and capital of British Columbia, Victoria is known for its exhilarating scenery, flower gardens, historic sites and outdoor attractions. Juan De Fuca Provincial Park
Juan de Fuca Provincial Park on the west coast of southern Vancouver Island offers scenic beauty, spectacular hiking, marine and wildlife viewing and roaring surf in its course along the Pacific coastline of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There are four main areas to the park: the China Beach Campground, the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, the China Beach day-use area and Botanical Beach.
Mount Washington
Mount Washington Alpine Resort is Vancouver Island's premier winter destination with a consistent record for the deepest natural snowpack in Canada (average snowpack 10.5m) and a unique Island location that offers spectacular, ocean and mainland mountain views from the mile high summit. Skiers and snowboarders will enjoy over 60 Alpine trails accessed by 9 lifts, while Nordic sport enthusiasts will have access to 55kms of scenic cross-country trails and a World Class Nordic Centre. Other must do activities include snowshoeing, tubing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding.
Mount Cain
Situated on the north end of Vancouver Island, (5 hours from Victoria) Mount Cain offers a unique experience to skiers, snowboarders and backcountry skiers. At Mount Cain you'll find deep powder, 21 runs, with 1499 vertical feet of terrain. It is open three days a week (weekends and select Mondays) which permits the powder to accumulate all week. Mt. Cain is a unique experience with 2 t-bars (no chair-lifts), few line-ups and the welcoming atmosphere of a family oriented mountain. Mount Cain has the highest base elevation of any coastal ski hill in BC, Alaska and Washington State. Our peak elevation is second only to Whistler. Mt. Cain is located near Schoen Lake Provincial Park and is run by the non-profit Mount Cain Alpine Park Society, Vancouver Island's only community owned and operated ski hill!
Tofino / Ucluelet
Located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, this spectacular area has stunning old growth rain forests, pristine sandy beaches and amazing wildlife. Originally a small fishing village, it is now world known for surfing. The area is part of the protected Pacific Rim National Park, and a destination for outdoor recreational adventures including surfing, sea kayaking, hiking, whale watching, storm watching, sport fishing, and strolling the beach.
